The 2007-2008 season saw Vale finish second-from-bottom, and were relegated, some twelve points from safety. Manager Martin Foyle left the club in September, and Lee Sinnott failed to improve results despite making several loan signings. Vale were also knocked out of the FA Cup at the Second Round by Southern Football League side Chasetown, a club five divisions below the Vale.
Vale had no luck in either the League Cup or the Football League Trophy, exiting both competitions at the first stage. Throughout the season the club saw a large turnover of players, as Sinnott attempted to build a squad of players of his own choosing to prepare for a promotion push
the following season.
Development of Westport Road with modern flats took place during the 2007-2008 season, the area between the ancient roads of Hill Street and Greenhead Street. As Packhorse Lane was the original route out of Burslem through Longport to Newcastle – an alternative route was turnpiked in 1763 it ran from Fountain Square (end of Market Place) in Burslem town centre down to the junction of Davenport Street and Brownhills Road.
Originally Hill Street – it became Liverpool Road because in the early 1800’s this road was indeed the road, through Tunstall to Church Lawton and onto Liverpool and the North – where pottery ware was transported to America. In the early 1950’s Liverpool Road was renamed Westport Road. Ideally placed were Hill Top Pottery and Wade’s Hill works.
