Despite a compacted pre-season due to Port Vale’s achievements at Wembley and FIFA arranging the World Cup in December, they won their opening game in July.

The Valiants had a quiet January transfer window and a poor run of results from February to mid-April saw manager Darrell Clarke leave the club with assistant manager Andy Crosby given the task of keeping the club in League One. The club’s final total of 49 points was enough to secure an eighteenth- place finish, four points above the relegation zone, and Crosby was given the job permanently.

Jack Shorrock became the youngest first team player in the club’s history at 15 years and 145 days old while plans were announced for a new scoreboard, vital improvements to the Vale Park pitch drainage system and moving the home fans from Bycars to Hamil Road to make full use of the Fanzone.

As spiralling energy costs were becoming a major concern for energy-intensive manufacturers such as the ceramics businesses due to war in Ukraine, It was announced in May 2023 that Wade Ceramics had been sold to RKW leading to the creation of 100 jobs. The pottery company initially fell into administration the previous December with the loss of 130 jobs.

RKW is the trading division of Sutton Venture Group (SVG) and makes small domestic appliances and housewares. The new jobs were based at the head office in Fenton and its Staffordshire-based distribution centre.
