At the start of the 2016-17 season, Vale had a new man in charge, as the club looked to Bruno Ribeiro to bring a new style of football to Vale. Bruno would bring in 19 players during his first summer window and things started brightly, with Vale in the play-offs in October.
However, a run of poor results and the Valiants began to slide down the wrong end of the table and Ribeiro ultimately resigned on Boxing Day 2016 and was replaced by Michael Brown in a caretaker role. Brown did all he could to try and keep Vale in League One, but the club were eventually relegated on the final day of the season after drawing 0-0 with Fleetwood Town.
The last firing of a bottle kiln with coal took place at the Sutherland works of the Hudson & Middleton family which closed in 2016. These works had previously been operated by William Hudson from 1889, producing fine quality bone china mugs and tea sets. The company was one of the last remaining potteries manufacturing all of their fine bone china mugs in England.
The City of Stoke-on-Trent was shortlisted for the 2022 City of Culture in 2017 but lost out to Coventry. It did however inspire our ‘the Stoke 2000’ project, which celebrates the City’s industrial heritage through art, cultural activities, education and recycling.
The Great Pottery Throw Down also stopped production on the BBC in March 23rd 2017 at Middleport Pottery. It was then moved to More4 from 8th January to 11th March 2020, and has been broadcast at Gladstone Pottery Museum by Channel 4 since 10th January 2021.
